Every week I hear from a co-worker, a friend or a family member, that they are going on a trip somewhere. I am a travel addict and this news always triggers a craving in me. It has been three years since I was in Kenya. Just yesterday my cousin called me and said she and her husband, were going to Cartagena, Columbia. My sister wanted to join them and needed a partner for the double occupancy, would I be interested?
Of course I want to go, but I took a deep breath and said, “I’ll have to say no” Why would I say no to travel? Because I am saving to do a three week trip to Peru. Hiking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu aside, I want to walk under the catacombs of the San Francisco Monastery in Lima. Take a tour of the vineyard of Pisco and drink pisco sours, fly over the Nazca Lines, photograph the sea lions and penguins on the Ballestas Islands, the Condors in Colca Canyon, and the macaws at a clay lick at Tambopata nature preserve in the Amazon. Who knows a jaguar or tapir may pose for me.
The white city of Arequipa will be interesting, I can soak in a hot spring admiring the volcanoes, peer into humanities past at a mummy called Juanita. There is lake Titicaca to explore, cobblestone streets around Cusco to stroll and the ruins and markets of the Sacred valley to ramble about. I’ll finally get to compare if the colours of rainbow mountain are as true in real life, as the pictures on Instagram. Just to experience being in the thin air, so high up in the Andes mountains, will be an experience not to be missed.
Joining my sister and cousin for a week on a beach in Columbia, might sound delicious but it will side track me from my savings goal, causing me to either delay my trip or decrease my itinerary. What do you think? Have you ever had to stay focused on a travel goal? Drop me a note.
Happy travels from Maritimemac.

Why not wind down after your trip with time on the beach with your sister for a few days?

That sounds great and I can do that on Marble Mountain Beach in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

though i’m sure a trip with your sister would be nice, i feel your planned trip will be much more of an adventure more suited to “you.” off the normal beaten path, how fun!!!

Every trip I’ve ever taken was on a shoestring budget. My advice is to take the trip to Peru and do every thing on your list. Never put off travel.

I appreciate your input. I keep hearing about not delaying traveling and I am putting it off for another 16 months which is contrary to my what my heart wants but I don’t like debt so I have to save for it.
I too have done all my traveling on a shoestring, I am going with the intentions of seeing and doing everything on my list, as I probably will not ever go back, I have so much to see and I am running out of life.

Time does run out and I am starting to understand that, but I can’t jump at every small opportunity or I will miss the big picture.

I ‘m with you, whenever a co worker or friend starts talking about a trip they’re going on I can feel the wanderlust creeping up on me. My husband and try to keep our big trips to once every two years so we have time to save , but sometimes it’s hard to resist.

wonderful easterntrekker. I try to do a big trip every three years, gives me time to save. My bucket list is too long…

Macho Picchu will be an amazing adventure. That’s a trip I would love to do, but I’m afraid I don’t handle the elevation like I used to. Interesting how the more we travel, the longer our travel lists get.

Do what will make you happy. Don’t want to regret taking this vacation and then bot being able to do what you wanted on yours. That might cause some resentment. I’m in the same boat. I am saving up for a 3 week trip to travel Europe. I have to stay focus.

I can relate to this. My friends seem to always want to plan things for when I plan to be away travelling! I could cave in and agree to that weekend away or that festival with a friend instead, but if I’m already planning to be travelling at that time, I have to keep some kind of a one-track mind about it and know that it will be worth it. You are going to love Peru!

absolutely, stick to your guns and go for your first choice!
MP was on my list, even had the ticket but got a full refund due to health complications and somehow my enthusiasm waned. Watch all the shows on it but prefer to try to settle now 🙂
