Tomorrow I am heading to Baxter State Park, Maine, to hike Mount Katahdin, with some friends. This will be my first summit this summer.
I will be taking the 10 essentials in my pack. A Osprey EJA 38 plus; passport, Health insurance, Park info, headlight, bug spray, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, 3 liters of water plus a filter and bladder.
Personal items: A warm jacket, a rain jacket, extra pair of socks. I will wear short under longer pants in case I get too warm, a hat and I will be wearing Merrill hikers. Band aids and theraband tape, matches, mouth wash and toilet paper. yes I am taking my Camera. (I know the extra weight is not desirable.)
Food: two sandwiches of Tofurkey and Daiya cheese, roasted sea weed snacks, two Vega bars, sesame seed snaps, a banana an apple, Reese peanut butter cups, plain potato chips. Mixed nuts with vegan chocolate chunks, and Vega electrolytes for my water. When you hike for 10 hours you can eat junk.
If all goes well, I will have a great post to share but not till Tuesday at the earliest. I will be home very late on Sunday.
Wish me good luck.
Good luck! I was there years ago, but it was pouring the whole time we were there.

I have a feeling you will do great! And don’t forget to come back with a picture, would be a shame to have carried the camera otherwise. 😉

Wow Kelly! I’m a hiker too and it’s understandable to bring your health insurance, but travel insurance? There is such a thing too? Interesting. Have fun! You will do well on it. Good Luck!

It’s called that, only because, when we travel outside Canada , we need medial insurance.

Omg. My sister is doing a thru-hike from Georgia. She’s in NJ and has gone over 1300 miles so far! How cool that you’re doing this!! I just finished reading a book about Grandma Gatewood’s first thru hike in the 1950’s. Awesome stuff!
